2010年8月1-12日,本会与查尔斯沃思集团美国公司共同举办了一次中国高校科技期刊编辑与美国同行的学术交流。此次活动内容丰富,成效显著。为方便广大会员及时了解有关情况,共享考察成果,本会在征得有关方面同意后,将陆续把有关报告发布在本会网站。 10 Effective Practices of a High-Impact Journal August 3, 2010 1. Choose the Editorial Board • Select subject matter experts – 172 Editorial Board members – More than 30 disciplines spanning the biological, physical, and social sciences • Recruit established leaders in their field – Editorial Board is comprised of NAS Members • Enlist rising stars in the field – Invite up and coming experts to serve as guest editors and reviewers • Find people dedicated to the journal 2. Recruit High-Impact Manuscripts • Rely on Editorial Board to guide content – Board members know what is going on in their field – Maintains high standards of the journal • Invite promising researchers personally – Use a Recruiting Editor to build relationships • Provide incentive for invited papers, if accepted for publication – Waive publication charges – Feature on cover 3. Select Topics of Current Interest • Attend scientific conferences and meetings – Poster sessions and seminars provide a first look at emerging research in a given field – Communicate with attendees to learn what they are working on and encourage them to submit their research • Highlight exceptional articles with a Commentary – During the review process, a board member may recommend a paper for additional coverage – Expert provides opinion about the research • Publish Feature Articles, when appropriate – Allows for a slightly longer format than the standard 6-page research articles – Typically appears on the cover 4. Ensure Rigorous Peer Review • Assign manuscripts appropriately for review – Utilize subject matter experts • Contact editors and reviewers quickly – Keep review process moving – 4-6 weeks for peer review • Keep the process simple and user-friendly – Ensure the online system is easy to use – Transfer the administrative aspects to staff – Allow authors to monitor progress of their manuscript online 5. Screen for Ethical Issues • Establish clear ethical guidelines – Printed in our Information for Authors document • Create internal and external procedures – Must have plans in place to resolve any conflicts of interest or ethical concerns – Communicate with subject matter experts if questions arise • Ensure compliance with journal guidelines – Follow through with authors on suspected issues 6. Communicate Regularly with Authors • Maintain open lines of communication – Rely on editorial staff to respond quickly and effectively with both authors and reviewers • Use online submission system for routine communication – Automate standard correspondence – Let the technology streamline your communication 7. Prepare Papers for Publication • Establish journal style and policies – Page formatting and article length – Supporting Information (SI) • Communicate clear performance expectations – Vendors must ensure quality and timeliness • Set archiving policies – both print and online – Plan for perpetual access – Archive available on PNAS.org, PubMed Central, JSTOR, Portico (under consideration) • Plan for new technological advances – Online platforms must be adaptable (mobile devices, cell phones, video) 8. Provide Added Value Online • Push content to readers through RSS feeds – Timely updates when new content is posted online • Introduce multimedia – Audio (podcasts), video (vodcast) • Consider interactivity – comments, blogs, letters to the editor • Maximize discoverability – Current and archived content must be easy to find – Special topic collections (repackaging) • Open Access – Discounted OA fees for online subscribers 9. Attract Media Coverage • Keep information audience-friendly – Headlines and summaries must be easy to understand – Keep relevant to timely issues • Distribute as widely as possible – Maintain relationships with global media outlets • Provide additional information when possible – Photos or videos help illustrate findings • Establish open lines of communication with media outlets – Provide timely release of information to meet deadlines 10. Embrace Technology • Follow blogs, discussion boards, and other online journals – Monitor and stay current on emerging technologies • Encourage online usage of journal resources – IP based subscriptions – Institution wide access for multiple, concurrent users • Monitor online communication trends for disseminating information – Mobile devices • Collect feedback from users – Authors and subscribers know what they want
